چکیده

NGC 4815 is a distant and populous open cluster, which lies in the galactic plane in a region of strong absorption. As a consequence, its membership, spatial distribution and luminosity function are not well determined. In this paper, we present an algorithm which uses both positional and photometric data simultaneously to search for open cluster members. The contribution of the field stars is estimated by our Galaxy model software. The method has been developed for deep CCD photometric observations, but it can also be used to investigate the membership in an n-dimensional space, including proper motions, radial velocity and metallicity. A clean and well defined colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) for NGC 4815 has been obtained after decontaminating from field stars.Wehave investigated the spatial distribution of cluster members and the luminosity function. We have shown that the projected surface distribution of stars is well-represented by an exponentially decreasing function with a scale length of 1.67 ± 0.06 arcmin. We have found evidence for mass segregation. The luminosity function for NGC 4815 is similar to that of the Hyades cluster, and shows a gap at V = 15 mag.

Spatial dependence of 2 MASS luminosity and mass functions in the old open cluster NGC 188

Luminosity and mass functions in the old open cluster NGC 188 are analysed by means of J and H 2MASS photometry, which provides uniformity and spatial coverage for a proper background subtraction. With an age of about 6–8 Gyr, NGC 188 is expected to be suffering the effects of advanced dynamical evolution. Indeed, previous works in optical bands have suggested the presence of mass segregation. ...

The Metallicity Dependence of the Stellar Luminosity and Initial Mass Functions: HST Observations of Open and Globular Clusters

Using HST and the WFPC2 we have acquired very deep Vand I-band photometry of stars in NGC 2420 and NGC 2477 to study cluster luminosity functions at approximately solar metallicity. We have determined these cluster luminosity functions down to MI = 10.5 (0.2 M⊙) and find that the luminosity function of NGC 2420 turns over at MI ≈ 9.0, and possibly stops altogether by MI ≈ 9.5. The luminosity fu...

Non-uniform extinction in young open star clusters

The extinction law and the variation of colour excess with position, luminosity as well as spectral class in young open star clusters NGC 663, NGC 869, NGC 884, NGC 1502, NGC 1893, NGC 2244, NGC 2264, NGC 6611, Tr 14, Tr 15, Tr 16, Coll 228, Tr 37 and Be 86 have been studied. The difference in the minimum and maximum values of E(B − V ) of cluster members has been considered as a measure of the...

The Low - Mass X - Ray Binary - Globular Cluster Connection in Ngc 4472 1

We have analyzed the low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) candidates in a Chandra observation of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. In a region observed by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), approximately 40% of the bright (LX&10 37 ergs s) LMXBs are associated with optically identified globular clusters (GC). This is significantly higher than the fraction of bright LMXBs in Galactic GCs and confirms...

Cluster Study XI : WIYN 1 3 . 5 m Deep Photometry of M 35 ( NGC 2168 ) Ted

We present deep BV I observations of the core of M35 and a nearby comparison field obtained at the WIYN 3.5m telescope under excellent seeing conditions. These observations probe to V > 26, and display the lower main sequence in BV and V I CMDs down to V = 23.3 and 24.6, respectively. At these faint magnitudes the background Galactic field stars are far more numerous than the cluster stars, yet...
